Should you Live DowntownLiving in the city can be a great choice for many people. The culture, the nightlife, and the proximity to essential amenities can be an alluring draw for those looking to live at a faster pace than in the suburbs or country. Add this to the fact that many Southwestern Ontario cities, like Cambridge, are sponsoring multi-million dollar projects to update and improve their downtown cores and you may have a compelling argument for living the city lifestyle!

One element of living in a city’s downtown core usually means sacrificing space by living in an apartment or a condo. However, depending on your priorities and values, this is not necessarily a bad thing. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, someone living in an apartment style building near public transportation will use far less energy than someone living in a traditional suburban building. For those concerned about their carbon footprint, living downtown could be for you!

The second feature of living downtown is that you are in a cultural hub, and you will be living closer to both people and entertainment venues than you would in the suburbs or in a rural area. This can be a good or bad thing depending on your personal preferences. More people means more noise. It’s difficult to avoid occasionally hearing your neighbours, traffic and other sounds of the city when you’re living downtown. However, when you feel like having fun, you’re usually steps away from entertainment, bars, and other cultural venues. Also, essential services, like laundry and public transportation, are usually close by.

Take downtown Cambridge for instance, the city’s Galt neighbourhood represents much of the downtown core and features more than 30 retail stores, 26 restaurants and cafes, 15 salons and spas and 15 health and wellness stores. The city also has great events going on like the Galt Grandfest Music Festival.

So, should you live downtown? That depends very much on what your priorities are and what you want out of your home. If you don’t mind living in a smaller amount of space or up higher in a condo or apartment and want to be close to entertainment and amenities, living in the city could be right for you!
